Vogue U.S. editor Anna Wintour got to talk about politics, fashion, and Melania Trump, First Lady of the USA. Let’s just say that Wintour is not a fan of Melania Trump’s style. Since Anna W. is shadier than her dark sunglasses, let’s hear what she had to say.
Melania Trump joined her husband to formal visit to the U.K. Anna Wintour is British, and on the podcast from The Economist, Anne McElvoy asked her about Melania Trump’s style.
“Melania, I think, very consciously, wanted to see herself as an ambassador for British fashion, in this case, or a transatlantic ambassador,” McElvoy commented, regarding ‘Melania’s U.K. visit in June. “I mean, do you value that?”
Now, here’s where it gets dirty: “Well, I think First Lady Michelle Obama really was so incredible in every decision she made about fashion,” Wintour replied. “She supported young American designers. She supported designers, indeed, from all over the world. She was the best ambassador this country could have in many ways, obviously, way beyond fashion.”
The journalist insisted on getting an answer. She continued: “But ‘she’s not the first lady now,” McElvoy said. “So what about the one ‘you’ve got now?” And here comes the mother of all shades:
Anna Wintour replied: “To me, Obama is the example that I admire.”
Unlike many other first ladies, Mrs. Trump didn’t score a Vogue cover. Though Melania Trump’s style has won the majority of fashionistas and some designers, it is clear that Wintour does not care. Melania was Vogue’s cover girl when she just married the current president of the USA.
Anna Wintour made her views clear, but so did First Lady. Melania’s spokeswoman and new White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement: “Her role as the first lady of the United States and all that she does is much more important than some superficial photoshoot and cover,” she added. “This just further demonstrates how biased the fashion magazine industry is, and shows how insecure and small-minded Anna Wintour really is.”
