Sales Drop, Cell Phone Prices Are Getting Higher

There’s a growing trend among cell phone buyers: they are holding onto their old phones since the prices are higher than ever. Apple and Samsung felt this in the first half of the year. On the other hand, Huawei increased sales by 50%. Let’s explore the topic.

Cell phone prices are getting higher and people have had enough

People, the consumers, finally realized that nothing has changed in the past few years in the smartphones world. So, why not hold onto the old models and wait until the prices drop. Maybe wait for something worth buying. Apple got another bad news this week, which will add an extra 100 USD to their phones. President Trump announced new tariffs on China imports that would include the iPhone since it’s assembled in China with mostly Chinese parts.

Apple’s iPhone suffered major drops in sales

Overall, the decline in sales is not dramatic: only 6,6%. Samsung is still the leader, while Huawei is now on the second place. iPhone is still the most popular and prestigious, yet the last model that caught everyone’s attention was 6s. That was five years ago. Which is why the company decided to present a cheaper model for 2020, and an additional discount if you bring your old iPhone to the store.

There will more declines in sales, according to the experts. In 2018, for the first time, smartphone sales stopped growing. By May this year, iPhone decreased sales by 15% in the US and 30% worldwide. The message is clear: we don’t need more new models. We don’t need better cameras. We need more options when it comes to budget.

New generations enjoy the privacy of flip phones

Another reason people refuse to get the latest models is privacy concerns. Gen Z seems fascinated by flip phones. They are easy to use and mostly unbreakable. And those batteries could last for years. Many factors should be considered, but if the consumers keep up the good work, there will be major changes among the biggest cell phone sellers.
