Woody Allen is defending, well, Woody Allen. The director’s latest movie, A Rainy Day In New York, won’t get the US release. But the movie got a premiere in Paris, France. There was no red carpet, Allen was not attending the premiere. Still, he has a lot to say in his defense, just days after Scarlett Johansson said: “I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.”
Scarlett Johansson and Woody Allen worked together on three films and the actress praised him once again in the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter. And here is what Allen said ” I’ve worked with hundreds of actresses and not one of them has ever complained about me, not a single complaint. I’ve worked with, employed women in the top capacity, in every capacity, for years and we’ve always paid them exactly the equal of men,” he said in an interview with France24.

The last sentence sounds so ignorant that not even his biggest fans can explain it. Allen technically didn’t marry his stepdaughter. He did marry a very young woman who saw a father figure in him. That’s a fact. Now, the issue of Dylan Farrow’s sexual abuse allegations, that’s still up in the air. We were taught to believe the victim. Yet, when it comes to high-profile celebrities, we fail.
A Rainy Day In New York might still get that US release, at least Allen hopes so. As for the actors, including Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Hall, it is hard to say. They expressed regret in working on the film and donated their salaries to anti-abuse charities. Considering the director already finished a new movie in Spain, his career will be fine, with or without the US theaters.
When it comes to allegations, backlash, and retirement, Allen doesn’t care. Literally. “I couldn’t care less. I’ve never worked in Hollywood. I’ve always worked in New York, and it doesn’t matter to me for a second. If tomorrow nobody would finance my films and nobody would finance my theater plays or nobody would publish my books, I’d still get up and write because that’s what I do.” Allen added that he’s always welcomed in Europe.
Dylan Farrow tweeted a response to Johansson’s interview. She said: “Scarlett has a long way to go in understanding the issue she claims to champion.” No matter how you feel, we don’t expect a single rainy day for Woody Allen. Quilty or not.
