Jungle Cruise doesn’t hit the theatres until the middle of 2020. But the goal of the Disney movie, starring The Rock and Emily Blunt, is to become a franchise. Even the trailer has a similar mood to the Pirates of the Caribbean, though the box office success will determine the movie’s future.
Jungle Cruise amusement park opened in 1955. The movie talk started in the mid-2000s, a few years after Disney had experimented with turning park attractions into movies. The Country Bears (2002), The Haunted Mansion (2003) weren’t what Disney wanted, money-wise, so it’s safe to say that the pressure is on for the cast and the crew of the upcoming Jungle Cruise.
Here’s what we know about the plot of Jungle Cruise:
Johnson will play a boat skipper named Frank who takes Blunt’s character Lily and her brother McGregor (Jack Whitehall) on a mission to find a tree that has magical healing powers. The journey will see them fight wild animals and compete against a rival German expedition. Disney added that there will be a “supernatural element.”According to Blunt, it’s a love story. “The adventure of a lifetime,” The Rock adds in a behind-the-scenes video.
The upcoming movie will continue where the Pirates left. Alongside Indiana Jones 5 and Jumanji franchise, the company does have a long term plan to dominate the cinemas. The company owns both Marvel and Lucasfilm. But it is still unclear what will happen to the Pirates of the Caribbean. There are several possible scenarios:
There’s still one untitled Pirate project left, but its destiny is unclear. There was the talk of restarting the whole franchise, but that fell flat, as well. This is where Jungle Cruise comes: the movie can introduce a connection to the reboot of the Pirates. And with Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock, both among most profitable actors, it’s certain that it’s going to be a hit. Without Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, the Pirates franchise needs to either be left alone or get a reboot.
