Star Wars has always been a fandom filled with all sorts of crazy fan theories, and the new trilogy is no exception. Unarguably the biggest debate of the new movies is the issue of Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) parents. She’s the main character and yet not much is known about her. Her background has been touched at in the first two movies (Kylo implying that her parents are just random space bums who abandoned her). Many fans were absolutely certain that Luke would be revealed to be her father in The Last Jedi, but that didn’t happen.
Could he still be, though? Or was Kylo actually right? It seems that such an important character like Rey will be more than just the daughter of random nobodies.
Here are a few interesting (and maybe crazy) fan theories floating about:
– Palpatine is somehow involved in her birth – The former emperor / Sith Lord’s distinct laughter can be heard at the end of the teaser trailer for Episode 9. Could it be a clue that he is somehow involved in Rey’s existence? Perhaps as her grandfather, or even the result with him trying to create life through the dark side of the force? This wouldn’t be the first time we learned that a character had no biological father (Anakin). However, there is still the question as to who Rey’s mother could have been.
– Obi-Wan is her grandfather – Even though Obi-Wan has always seemingly maintained a monkish / celibate existence, he WAS in Tatooine for a very long time. Who knows what he could have been up to? Some fans have been speculating if he could have fathered a child at some point, and that child could’ve been one of Rey’s parents. It still begs the question of how they could’ve gotten from Tatooine to Jakku, and how it all ties into the overall story.
– Han Solo is her father – Whether Leia is her mother or Han spent time with another woman during a time when he and Leia were estranged is up for speculation. There did appear to be a flicker of recognition in Leia’s eyes when she first met Rey. Plus, this theory could explain why Rey had an instant connection with the Millennium Falcon and almost knew how to use it right away. Was it more than just the force at work?
– Luke is her father – As it has been speculated by many all along, there is still the possibility that Luke is her father, despite him not mentioning it in Episode 8. The new movie IS called The Rise of Skywalker and she is apparently the main character. It could still technically apply to Kylo / Ben Solo since he is of the Skywalker bloodline through his mother’s side.
That leads to yet another question that needs answered: What exactly is the relationship between Rey and Kylo / Ben? Cousins? Half-siblings? Twins even? Or perhaps he was right, and she really is just the daughter of “nobodies”.
