Should There Be Unbelievable Season 2?

Netflix Unbelievable is among the greatest TV treasures of the year. When They See Us is another show worth watching, and both are based on true stories. Both TV shows will break your heart, so if you haven’t seen them, binge watch, but prepare. Should Unbelievable return for season 2?

Let’s start with the premise of the show. Unbelievable follows the true story of multiple rape investigations, based on the ProPublica Pulitzer Prize-winning article, An Unbelievable Story of Rape and the This American Life radio episode, Anatomy of Doubt. The show is based on the interviews conducted with the real sexual assault survivor and others involved in the case.

Netflix confirmed there won’t be season 2: “It’s a limited series and based on the true story, alas, we won’t have another season.”

The story is over, but there are other, similar cases which can be used to break the stigma that follows rape victims. The case is only 10 years old and not much has changed.

When They See Us also starts with rape. But, that’s a story of five black and Hispanic teens who were wrongly convicted of the violent rape of a white jogger in New York in the late 1980s. They were eventually exonerated over a decade later after spending years in prison.  Again, we know how the story ends. But clearly, these two shows opened a platform against discrimination of any kind.

The acting, the fact that these people are real, it makes these shows even more convincing. Unbelievable season 2 should not be a work of fiction. It should simply tell another story. And the same goes for When They See Us. Because both stories are based on prejudice and innocent lives were almost destroyed.

Certain people will say that Netflix is just being PC friendly, pandering to certain politic parties, the “in-crowd.” It may be so, but these crimes are well documented. They do not go against certain groups, they go against discrimination. And that makes all the difference.
